Washington DC Radio Personality Sheila Stewart, known as “Miss Community”, is bringing HIV/AIDS awareness in the area by hosting the First Annual Sheila Stewart Youth HIV/AIDS Gospel Choir Competition Saturday, July 19th, 2008 at Carolina Missionary Baptist Church in Fort Washington, MD from 7:00-9:00 pm. The church is building a home for single mothers who are HIV positive. The home is called “My Sisters Keeper.” A portion of the proceeds from the event will aid in the building of the home. The Senior Pastor of the church is Anthony E. Moore who is one of the most prominent pastors in Prince George’s County.
Stewart hopes to address the rising rate of HIV/AIDS in PG County which is ranked 4th in the country for new cases reported. “This competition will serve as a positive & educational platform for young people,” said Stewart.
The event will be judged by local celebrities including Washington Wizards Caron Butler, HBO’s The Wire star Slim Charles, Washington Redskins Chris Samuels, 93.9’s Jeannie Jones, & Angie Ange, President of 100 Black Men of Greater Washington Marvin Dickerson, Gospel Singer James Murphy, Richard Smallwood Vocalist Minister Stephanie Winslow, Praise 104.1’s Program Director Matt Anderson and others. Cash prizes and trophies will be given to the top three choirs. The winning choir will also perform live on the National Syndicated Russ Parr Morning Show heard in 40 U-S cities.
Stewart is an award winning radio, television and print media journalist whose career spans over 20 years. She is one of the most sought after motivational speakers in the area and is married to Youth Pastor Bill Russell. Sheila is the morning news anchor for the Russ Parr Morning Show on WKYS 93.9-FM.
