Hampton Roads the eastern side of Virginia is a lovely place to come every year. Doing this time in June, there is annual event that has been going on for forty one years. The event is titled “Hampton Jazz Festival”. The first day at the Hampton Colosseum had a 3 piece jazz band open , followed by Chrisette Michelle, Raheem Devaughn, Johnathan Butler, Boney James and then Gladys Knight and her orchestra.
Although it appeared the sound man for the Colosseum needed a permanent vacation, the show was very enjoyable. Chrisette , who is still developing as a performer , was great and entertaining. I remember Raheem Devaughn and Painter Dude aka Peeksao before the bodyguards because streetroachpis.com has many pictures of them before anyone was taking pictures of them. Raheem was able to connect to his fan base in a very personal way and , at the end of the show , he signs autographs and allows you buy CD's. Raheem Devaugh's actions is rare these days. Johnathan Butler cuts his budget by allowing his two lovely daughters to sing backup for him and , he did a few songs with Boney James and ,Boney James did a few songs with him. The two were classic and very entertaining. Last but not least, the great Gladys Knight redefined class act when she hit the stage. It was simple but Duke Ellington classy. Knight came out in outfit that a woman her age and size should wear and , she raised the crowd young and old to their feet better then the previous acts.
Stay tune for day two of the Hampton Jazz fest. Day two is sold out so stay tuned.
