Bob Johnson, the founder of BET and billionaire, goes off on another old man’s rant. This rant was caused by the congressional hearing about Hip Hop. Although Bob Johnson is considered a “Black Crusader”, there seems to be some problems at the round table. One of the committee members named Rep. Ed Markey made the following comments. “the lowest common denominator of cheap and tawdry music videos and other questionable programming.” Markey said he was encouraged by BET’s new shows, but said, “Frankly, it has a long way to go to make up for much of its previous programming.”
The comments allegedly sent old man Johnson threw the roof. Johnson allegedly pulled out his old civil rights and Black Panther pen and sent the Committee member a letter and cc the chair of the committee. Here are some comments from the letter. “Your unjustified and ill-informed attack on BET’s programming . . . suggests you know what is best for Black people, and in this case what Black people want to or need to see,” Johnson wrote in the letter. “And (it) is also a vivid example of why we need to keep the government out of free and creative expression.” Bob Johnson allegedly comments show at one point in time he said power to the people.
