If you have not heard, there is an up start activist group titled “Enough is Enough”. This group has various organizations supporting it to bring light to some of the programming at BET aka Black Entertainment Television. One of the black crusaders on the front line of the protest of this protest is Dr Faye Williams.
Dr Faye Williams has a nice shining resume. Dr Williams hasa very deep educational background. She holds a Ph.D. in Public Administration from City University at Los Angeles, as well as a Masters of Public Administration from the University of Southern California, a J. D. degree from Howard University School of Law; Administrative Credential from U.C.L.A, and BS Degree from Grambling State University of Louisiana. She has recently completed her Doctor of Ministry degree at Wesley Theological Seminary in Washington, DC. She has studied at the University of California, the University of Michigan, Pepperdine University & George Washington University—where she studied in the Education Policy Fellowship Program.
Along with all this education, Williams has been involved in various forms at activism. In other words, she has a track record of getting her hands dirty and not just presenting rhetoric. As many of you know, the rhetoric speakers get about 20mins of fame and a book deal when most activist are not so lucky. Williams a former congressional candidate is currently the National Chair of the National Congress of Black Women and president and CEO of Natural Health Options of Washington, DC.
William feels that BET is presenting bad programming. Williams has stated she and others have in the past met with BET to talk about the programming. Although Williams along with others have listed various problems to BET, BET has not made many changes to their product line. Williams wants BET to present better options for their views. Although BET states they target 18 – 34 year olds, Williams feels this is not reality of the real views of BET or Black Entertainment Television.
If we look at the last since and apply it to practice, one can see a little truth in Williams protest against BET. If we look at the current numbers that make up a the black family, it will show a lot of single parent house holds and in some cases the TV maybe the sometimes baby sitter. The parents on a day to day may not know what a child is watching. One reason a lot of single parent homes in America have more then one TV in the household regardless of income brackets. This leaves the child open to any type of program. Another factor in this protest by Williams and the black crusaders is TV and cable are regulated; therefore it is safe to say society as whole feels there is some social reasonability to this industry.
In conclusion, BET does have some social responsibility as well as the parents. The cable industry has provided various tools such as parenting control codes to block various programs. With the previous statement in mind, people always have to remember the practice or common sense. There are parental options on cable but will it be used and how effective will that be.
