The city council of Laurel, MD and the Mayor of Laurel ,MD are holding the voting population of the city under their thumb. The city is holding an election on Sept 8, 2009 but will only have one polling place open for 12,000 voters.

The voting ballot for the City of Laurel,MD has some major issues up for grabs. One topic on the ballot is a 15 percent pay raise for the Mayor and the city council members. The other issue is to allow major cuts in the boys and girls club for the city of Laurel as if kids are not hurting enough in this economy.

The People for Change in Prince Georges County held a major rally at the Anderson-Murphy Community Center. At the rally , there was standing room only for the event. PPGC along with community organizers in Laurel explained to the large crowd the major problem with the city council and the mayor of Laurel. Another voting item on the ballot is to extend the terms of the current Mayor and City council. The community organizers and PPGC have filed a lawsuits to prevent this because the City of Laurel have not open more polling places for its voting population along with some other line items.

Although many changes have come to Laurel over the last 20 years, diversity in the community is a major change along with tradition changes with minority thoughts against a majority. For example, the district that has the one polling place is not the majority population of the voting population. This district with the one polling place is a minority when you add up all the numbers of the voting population and the size of the population in each district.
