A Room of Her Own Foundation's fifth $50,000 Gift of Freedom is awarded to Barb Johnson, a carpenter-turned-writer from New Orleans, Louisiana. Soon after Johnson entered The University of New Orleans' MFA program, Hurricane Katrina hit, wiping out her carpentry business and livelihood. For a while after that she lived on her apartment's balcony in the evacuated city and continued to write. Her stories garnered numerous awards and a book contract by the time of her graduation in May, 2008. (PRWeb Jun 7, 2009)
